January is Human Trafficking Awareness month and an opportunity to shed light on a significant, yet rarely discussed issue. It is certainly a topic we never thought or heard much about, until launching /giv/.
Did you know that human trafficking is believed to be the third-largest criminal activity in the world*? It includes forced labor, domestic servitude, and commercial sex trafficking.
One organization that has focused on this global issue for the past 13 years is International Sanctuary. iSanctuary works to rehabilitate girls and young women rescued from human trafficking. iSanctuary provides them with marketable training, and empowers them with the skills they need to sustain themselves and pursue better futures filled with tangible options.
Women and girls are often trafficked far from their homes and taken across international borders. iSanctuary has centers in Mumbai, India and Orange County, California (and new ones coming to Mexico and Uganda), but has served rescued girls from all over the globe.
By providing meaningful employment and fair wages through iSanctuary's social enterprise, PURPOSE Jewelry, girls are able to support themselves and obtain job training and experience. iSanctuary also provides a wide range of holistic care services.
PURPOSE jewelry is handmade by women given a new start, and a chance for consumers to positively impact someone’s life. Here is a peek at their story:
So, if you need any gifts this year, consider one with a back-story worth sharing, and a cause that impacts 27 million enslaved people worldwide.
