Inspire. Encourage. Love.
"...Do Small Things in a Great Way" - Martin Luther King, Jr.
Happy New Year! Here at /GIV/, we’re on a mission to make giving a part of our, and hopefully your, everyday life in 2017. It takes small and large acts of kindness and compassion to change the world; everything and anything you choose to do counts.
In addition to some of my regular resolutions - read more books, organize the 5,322 pictures on my phone, plan monthly dates with my husband, and exercise 4x/week (eek!) - I also want to incorporate more “make-the-world-a-better-place” ideas into my year. And not just think about doing them, but actually, really, truly turn my ideas into actions! I think we’ll be amazed at how simple it really can be if we are more mindful about having a giving spirit.
We’ll be setting a manageable goal each month and posting updates along the way, and we invite you to join us on this /GIV/ing journey. Share your own experiences or a photo on our Facebook or Instagram pages (use #givalways so we can check it out). Let’s encourage and challenge one another to make 2017 the year of others!
January Goal: Create a “Just Because” Stash.
One simple idea is to browse the clearance toys and home sections to stock up for families-in-need. It seems that all too often we receive news of a family really struggling in our own community. Perhaps they lost everything in a fire, lost a job, have a medical emergency, or are fleeing an abuse situation. Having a stash of new toys, coloring books, toiletries, towels, a tea/mug set, or cozy blankets can be an awesome way to help lighten someone's load. You'll be ready to donate those items, or pair them with a meal or financial contribution when the time comes.
If your wallet is stretched thin from the holidays, homemade pick-me-up cards are a great option, too. How often do you receive a note just to let you know how much you're loved and appreciated? Hardly ever outside of holidays or birthdays, right? So recruit the kids, or break out your own stash of craft materials and create 8-10 ‘just because’ cards. It’s amazing how a few words of encouragement can brighten someone’s day; you never know what someone is going through. Your goal: distribute them to a friend, your significant other, the school admin, a stressed colleague, or a random stranger. So many ways to spread positivity and hope.
Stay tuned: progress notes of how we did, and February's challenge coming soon!
