This month’s giving challenge is to reach out to a somewhat distant (literally or figuratively) friend, neighbor or community member.
When I read this article, it broke my heart. (Similarly, can you even?!?) It made me think, “who could be lonely and desperately seeking a friendly conversation near me?”
It may be out of your comfort-zone to randomly approach a near-stranger – and many of us don’t want to risk offending or bothering someone. Plus, we’re all crazily running around from one thing to the next, with barely enough time for ourselves!
But, I challenge you to stop. Think for a few moments about someone you haven’t seen recently in your neighborhood. Or do you know any widows or widowers? How about a mom or dad that stands distantly at the bus stop or school events with no one to talk to? An acquaintance going through a tough time?
Do it: be the first-mover to strike up a conversation. Be the person that leaves a short note in someone’s mailbox to say “We haven’t seen you recently, and hope you’re doing well. Here’s my phone number if you ever need anything!” And if you’re especially brave and kind, you could extend an invitation to dinner or coffee, too. It may not be comfortable, but you’ll never regret reaching out and showing someone kindness.
