Inspire. Encourage. Love.
This weekend I was motivated by the Spring weather to put away the winter clothes, tackle the growing clutter in the office, and to clean out my and the kids’ closets. I was also eager to try out the Amazon & Goodwill Partnership that I had read about earlier this year. (Plot Summary: I was rather underwhelmed. Read on to find out why.)
Easy as 1.2.3?
Spring cleaning and giving to others? A win-win! And this fits perfectly into our year-long plan to incorporate more giving back into our lives. (Catch up on our series here: January, February, March.)
April's Giving Goal is: Donate at least 2 bags or boxes of usable items.
During the holidays, I noted that Amazon encouraged reusing their boxes for free Goodwill donations, but I hadn’t heard of anyone trying it yet. Today is your/our day!
There are several organizations that will pick up donations from your house, which is particularly helpful if you have a lot to unload. GoGreenDrop.com (supports Purple Heart, American Red Cross & more) is great and super convenient for clothing, toys and small house-hold items. And Habitat for Humanity and other facilitators will pick up building materials, home improvement items and furniture.
If you are able to spend a little more time sorting through your items and researching local organizations, you could donate to a local women’s or homeless shelter, or even an animal rescue that could use linens. There is always a need!
Cleaning out is a perfect time to think about becoming a more conscientious consumer: to recognize that we don’t NEED piles of low-priced, mass-produced clothes each season, and instead we should be looking for quality, well-intentioned products and supporting companies that make the world a better place. Yes and yes. ;)
